Ear infection treatment can be suppressive (the more common kind) or can be holistic. Holistic treatment invariably works, not so much by dealing with the infection, but by raising your immune system, so you can heal yourself. An ear infection is a common side effect of a cold, a sinus infection, and other problems. The small tube that connects the inner ear with the nose becoming blocked usually causes earaches. Moisture builds up in the ear, and pressure increases. Thus, we get an ear infection. The ear is a very sensitive organ; it is the house of one of the most important senses of the human body – the auditory sense. Due to its delicate nature, there are several problems that can occur with the human ear. One of the most common problems occurs when the ear gets infected. In severe cases, pus formation may occur.

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) The holy basil, or tulsi as it is called in Hindi, is beneficial for ear problems. The juice extracted from its leaves must be used as ear drops. It has added benefits in children who are suffering from ear problems. Ear infections could be itchy or painful. Hence there is a tendency that the child will scratch the ear or put their fingers in the Eustachian tube. This must strictly be avoided as the dirt on the fingers will aggravate the infection further. Also, by doing so, the person is increasing the chances of infection to others. Even more effective than heat alone is a hot onion poultice. This is something you can make up at home quickly and easily. To make an onion poultice, heat ½ an onion in an oven or griller for a few minutes till hot. Wrap it in some cheesecloth or a clean cloth and apply it directly on the ear to allow the anti-infective fumes to work their way into the ear.

One of the most renowned ear infection remedies is vitamin C. Most homes will have a supply of vitamin C. Take at least 3-5 gram a day to strengthen your immunity. An imbalanced diet with too much refined food causes an accumulation of toxins and a breeding ground for bacteria. It is important to base the diet around fresh fruit and vegetables, quality proteins, natural oils and small amounts of whole grains. The B vitamins are essential for a healthy nerve supply to the ears. The most important B vitamins for ear problems are vitamin B3 or niacin and vitamin B6. Niacin improves circulation to the ears whilst B6 is essential for nerve health.

All sorts of oils can be used and the secret is to warm the oil[s] first. Don't try using essential oils in your ear, only Lavender essential oil can be used on the skin, all the rest need to be diluted before use. Baby oil is of course very pure and would be suitable for this purpose. Applying heat to an earache can usually reduce the pain. Heating pads and electric blankets can be a useful home remedy for ear infection. Remember never to put anything into your ear to try to remove a blockage. You could injure your ear, or push blockages in further.
