Dry Chapped Lips

By julia at 2009-11-24 23:44:33
Chapped lips are a condition whereby the lips become dry and possibly cracked. Chapped lips can be painful, embarrassing, and uncomfortable. Chapped lips are most often caused by being in overly windy, sunny, or dry conditions. Chapped lips can have several causes, including dry weather, overexposure to the sun, lip biting and sucking, riboflavin (vitamin B-2) deficiencies and ill-fitting dentures. Most people get chapped lips from time to time. Lips begin to lose their original skin once they get excessively dehydrated. This occurs when the lips fail to retain the natural moisture and the skin dries up. Lips are devoid of oil making glands by nature and have no means to replenish the lost moisture. The upper skin dies and peels off giving place to a new raw skin. Before this raw skin gets time to ripen, it dies due to lack of moisture. This keeps on occurring in a cycle and forces an urgency to find a chapped lips cure.

People may experience dry, chapped lips for a variety of reasons, including dehydration, constant exposure to the elements, and even allergic reactions to food or medications. Some people may even have a vitamin deficiency that causes the lips to become chapped. Other times, our very own behavior may be the culprit. One of the worst habits that can cause chapping is constantly licking your lips. To combat chapped lips, many people are prepared by always having a tube of lip balm with them at all times. In addition to applying creams or balms, one of the most important things to remember is to stay hydrated.

Angular Cheilitis is the medical name for this dry condition of lips. Licking of lips is the basic cause for this condition. There is always a strong temptation to lick the lips when they feel dryness and this frequent licking makes them drier than before. Other causes contributing to lip skin damage can be staying under hot sun for long duration or contact of lips with dry winds of winters. Excess of vitamin A and lack of vitamin B in the body are known to initiate skin disorders. Lips skin is very sensitive and needs extra protection to avoid grave infections.

Chapped Lips Cure

1. Massage the lips liberally with petroleum jelly and leave it for a few minutes. Now dip a cloth in warm water and rub the lips gently. Dead skin will come off together with petroleum jelly.

2. Apply natural lip balm on lips throughout the day and especially before going to bed. The balm will have a soothing effect on the lips. Always use alcohol free lip balms because alcohol can dry the delicate lip skin further.

3. Ladies should use moisturizing lipstick to keep the lips protected during daytime.

4. Use Castor oil to keep the lips well oiled and do it as many times as possible.

5. The Best of all is to rub the lips with Vitamin E gel frequently.

6. Avoid licking your lips.

7. Avoid excessive sun exposure.

8. Try to keep the air in your home humid.

9. Use a humidifier at home to keep air moist.

10. Avoid using a flavored lip balm, which can tempt you to lick your lips.

11. Use lip balm that contains sun block if you are going to be outside.

12. Use a sunscreen on your lips when outside in sunny weather.

13. Before applying lipstick, dab on a very small amount of lip balm or petroleum jelly to give your lips a little moisture.
